Background
From NZ Herald story August 1998
A man has been sentenced to four years jail for the Christmas Day attack on an 81 year old Lower Hutt woman that left her wishing she was dead. Aaron Rhys McDonald, aged 23, was so drunk at the time that he could not remember the attack. His victim, Ethel Kyte, of Epuni, cannot remember either. The injuries she suffered when McDonald hit her at least five times about the head led to a swift mental, emotional and physical decline. Her home had to be sold for rest-home care. Justice Goddard in sentencing criticised the Lower Hutt massage parlour that had allowed him to keep drinking and run-up a horrifying bar tab. McDonald then went to burgle Mrs Kyte's house looking for money to buy drugs.
