Background
From a Dominion article 24/04/1999
HIGH security surrounded Wellington's number one District Court yesterday as Ricky Fataaki Maua was sentenced to 11 years' jail for robbery and assault. Security included a last-minute switch of sentencing court and Maua was handcuffed and flanked by prison warders as he stood in the dock. A burly policeman was stationed at the courtroom door. At an earlier appearance, Maua, 32, escaped from custody by leaping from the Porirua District Court dock and went on to commit three armed robberies. Maua, had earlier pleaded guilty to charges of armed robbery, escaping from custody and assaulting the constable who was guarding him in the Porirua dock.
Judge David Ongley said Maua had a history of relentless offending and had served jail terms of two and 6 and a half years. He was apparently capable of leading a decent life, but his drug problem made him a danger to the community. Defence lawyer Val Nisbet said Maua had some worthwhile qualities and maintained that the shotgun he carried during some of the robberies would not work. Maua was originally in Porirua Court on a charge of robbing the BP service station at Tawa. The prosecution said Maua and another man were armed with an iron bar and a machete and encouraged the attendant to give them money and tobacco by threatening to cut off his hands. After his escape Maua committed two robberies in Stratford while armed with a sawn-off shotgun and an armed robbery in Wanganui.
