The girl was attending a party at the home of a parent and the guests with whom she arranged a ride home forgot her. Matthews and a friend offered her a ride and reluctantly she agreed. Almost immediately (the judge said he believed deliberately) the car took a wrong turn and Matthews began making terrifying threats to the girl. After raping her by the side of the road, he offered the girl to his friend, who declined.
