Background
From the Southland Times 05/12/2003
THREE Invercargill men were sent to prison when they appeared for sentencing in the Invercargill District Court yesterday before Judge David Saunders, of Dunedin.
Shea Bradley Eastlake, 17, dairy farming student, and Renae Toru John Konui, 18, both admitted injuring with intent on June 7.
Tane Rakana Matika, 21, also admitted injuring with intent and robbing the victim of his wallet and its contents.
Konui's counsel, Phil McDonald, said the victim was walking home from the Fight For Life, which was held at Stadium Southland, and took shelter at a bus stop when it started to rain.
Girls from a party at a nearby house went outside and began taunting the victim and tried to draw on his face with a marker pen.
Konui joined in the taunting and said the victim struck out at him. Konui believed one of the girls was hit. The other two became involved after she went inside. Crown solicitor Alister Garland said the victim denied hitting a girl and said he was struck before retaliating. Judge Saunders said the victim was severely beaten by the trio. Eastlake was sentenced to 15 months' prison with leave to apply for home detention. He was ordered to undertake drug and alcohol treatment as directed as a parole condition. Konui was sentenced to two years' prison -- 21 months for injuring with intent and another three months each for drink- driving with a blood-alcohol level of 135mg and driving while disqualified on June 29 to be served concurrently. He was also disqualified from driving for six months.
Matika was sentenced to five years and three months in prison. He was sentenced to two years and three months in prison for robbery and injuring with intent. For two burglaries on June 5 and one on June 6 he was sentenced to two and-a-half years' prison. For reckless driving and driving while disqualified, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and possession of an offensive weapon he was sentenced to six months' prison. Matika was disqualified from driving for another year from July 19, 2005, when he was due to get his licence back.
