Background
From the Dominion Post
A six-year jail term has been handed down to a man who stabbed another in the back, partially paralysing him. The victim can feel only pain in his legs and walks with difficulty. He was off work for nearly four months. Marshall Kerehi Mariu, 23, unemployed of Wainuiomata, pleaded guilty to a charge of wounding with intent to injure for the stabbing at a Wellington service station on August 20. At the time, he was on bail for a June incident in which he hit a man across the head with bolt cutters. For that he pleaded guilty to a charge of injuring with intent to injure. In Wellington District Court yesterday, Judge Margaret Lee said as at the middle of February the stabbing victim could not drive or walk long distances, or sit for extended periods. He did not know if his mobility would improve and he was angry and frustrated at what Mariu had done. His hobbies of hunting and dirt-bike riding might be gone for good.
The stabbing had a catastrophic effect on the victim, his partner, and his family, who travelled to Christchurch while he was in the Burwood Spinal Unit to ensure he was never alone. ACC covered only some of the expense. Both incidents happened when Mariu had been drinking and was in a group. Other members of his group got into an argument with a man at a service station and Mariu approached the man, stabbing him in the back, partially cutting his spinal cord. Mariu and his group yelled abuse as they drove away, Judge Lee said. In the earlier incident, Mariu's group approached a group of pedestrians. Mariu hit one of the pedestrians in the side of the head with bolt cutters. The victim needed stitches and was off work for two weeks. Judge Lee imposed a total of six years for both incidents. She said Mariu had to serve at least half the sentence. She hoped prison authorities would see that Mariu's serious alcohol and drug problems were treated.
