Background
NZ Herald story here
From the Southland Times
The court heard Mareangaru had stabbed 17-year-old Jodi Bonney because Mareangaru was in a "shitty mood" that day. Miss Bonney received numerous cuts to her face and scalp, was lucky not to be blinded and had been emotionally traumatised by the attack, the judge said. She had also avoided going out in public as a result of her injuries, he said. The court heard Mareangaru was under the influence of alcohol and cannabis at the time of the attack.
She and two friends had been in a car when they passed Miss Bonney walking on the street and minding her own business, the judge said. A verbal confrontation ensued and Miss Bonney walked a different direction. But Mareangaru and her two alleged associates stopped the car at a nearby house. One then chased Miss Bonney down Elles Rd and "began to kick her and punch her about the head and body". Miss Bonney ended up lying in the centre of the road, with vehicles having to drive around her. Mareangaru was watching.
