Background
From Waikato Times story Feb 4th 2003
A 38-year-old man Hamilton man has been jailed for four years for the sexual violation of a 9-year-old girl. Bowen Neha Manihera, unemployed, of Hamilton, appeared before Justice Randerson yesterday in the High Court at Hamilton. His lawyer, Kit Clews, said Manihera's sentencing posed some problems because of his deteriorating mental state since his guilty pleas last September. Manihera pleaded guilty to one charge of sexual violation, three of indecently assaulting a girl under 12 and one of assaulting a child under 14.
Justice Randerson said the offending happened between December 1999 and June 2001. It stopped in June 2001 after the girl tried to telephone her mother after Manihera indecently assaulted her. Manihera punched her in the face. Justice Randerson said he would take into account that Manihera suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and his diminished mental capacity. Manihera was identified as having a high risk of reoffending and his motivation to change was low, Justice Randerson said. He sentenced Manihera to a total of four years' jail and said it was essential Manihera get the treatment he needed while in prison.
