Sentenced to fifteen years in August 2010
Background
From the Northern Advocate 16th August 2010
A Far North man found guilty of committing a series of indecent acts, including rape, on two girls has been jailed for 15 years. Jackie Mane, 33, was earlier found guilty in the Kaikohe District Court and appeared for sentencing in the Whangarei District Court on Friday. He was charged with six counts of unlawful sexual connection with a girl under 16, two counts of indecent assault and one of rape.
Judge John McDonald said Mane's offended happened in Auckland and Northland. The judge said the sad part about the second victim's case was that her mother did not believe her when she reported what Mane did to her. "You have throughout and up until today denied your involvement," the judge said. Crown prosector Anna Patterson said Mane's repeated offending involved a degree of planning and pre-meditation over a long period that culminated in rape.
Defence lawyer Doug Blaikie said Mane's offending didn't involve violence or threats of violence. He said Mane had worked where he could instead of relying on social welfare payment and had made attempts to address his alcohol problem. Judge McDonald said since there were no mitigating factors, the starting point of 15 years would remain the ultimate sentence. A minimum non-parole period was not ordered.
