A 16-year-old youth yesterday found guilty of murder would end up serving his time in an adult prison, his lawyer told the High Court at Auckland yesterday. A jury of seven men and five women took just under 24 hours to find Sonny-Boy Makoare(16) guilty of murdering Rashley Walker outside his home in Otara last September.
Makoare, who was 15 when he stabbed Mr Walker twice, was sentenced to life imprisonment. Justice Dame Silvia Cartwright told the jury Makoare would initially be put in a youth facility and eventually transferred to an adult prison.
Makoare's lawyers, Paddy O'Driscoll and Jo Baddeley, said there were only six youth beds in the country and they were already taken. Sadly, Makoare would serve his time in the penal system.
William Henry Crosby (22) was cleared of murder or manslaughter but found guilty of assaulting Mr Walker with intent to injure him. He was remanded in custody for sentencing next month. Crown prosecutors Kieran Raftery and David Colbert said that before the killing there had been talk of giving Mr Walker a hiding and stabbing him.
