Sunday Star Times story August 24th 2008
Dwayne Maxwell wears a headband to hide the scars on his scalp after flaps of the teenager's skin were slashed from his skull with a sharpened chef's knife in an apparently random, frenzied attack two years ago. The attack has earned two otherwise promising young Auckland chefs from upstanding families a collective prison term of 13 years.
In handing down the sentences on Friday, high court judge Patricia Courtney told 24-year-olds Jacques Maddock and James Donnan she was "perplexed" by their actions. "No judge wants to put two young men of outwards good character in prison. Both of you have plenty to offer your families and the community but I must send the message that this kind of violence is unacceptable.
