From Christchurch Press story 25 February 2006
On the eve of his return to China, a student high on methamphetamine viciously knifed his countrywoman, leaving her with disabling injuries. Liu, 22, was sentenced yesterday after admitting a charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
The judge said the normal parole after one third of the sentence was manifestly inadequate, and justified a minimum term. "This is a case of extreme violence with serious injury caused after ingestion of a Class A controlled drug. "He said on October 5, Liu decided not to return to China as planned and tried to get hold of the victim.
The next day the pair were together in a Christchurch house when an argument began. Liu grabbed a serrated knife from the kitchen bench and starting a frenzied attack. The victim was stabbed about the arms, chest and head, the knife getting stuck in her hair, and was badly injured trying to fend off the attack. "This is a case where if it had turned out differently, you could easily have killed her."
The victim suffered seven wounds to the body, with damaged tendons in one hand, a broken bone in the left hand, and cuts to the side of the head and ear. "She was in hospital four days, required surgery, her life has been turned upside down, and she is scared for herself and her family." She could not continue her studies and had to go back to China to recover, the judge said.
Liu seemed to blame the victim, and it appeared clear that before the attack he had ingested pure methamphetamine, which was not an excuse. A possible motive was Liu's view she had stolen money from him, but that did not affect culpability. The judge said he was aware of the disgrace Liu had caused to his family under Chinese culture, and noted he had apologised to the victim.
