Sentenced to 6 years with a 4 year minimum non-parole period in July 2007
Background
From the Fiji Times 26th July 2007
A Fijian stowaway who was discovered inside a ship heading to Auckland with 13,500 pseudo-ephedrine tablets has been jailed for six years by a Christchurch court. Neumi Lewenikurowai, 38, already banned from New Zealand after serving a prison sentence on serious drug matters, had reportedly found himself stuck on board the vessel when the hold he was hiding in was not unloaded. He faces a minimum term of four years on two counts of importing a class C drug and possessing a precursor substance with intent to make methamphetamine.
Judge Phil Moran said on October 29, Lewenikurowai was found on the Pacific Islands trading vessel Capitaine Wallis with enough pseudo-ephedrine to make up to $577,000 worth of P. Lewenikurowai had reportedly boarded the vessel by dressing as a wharf worker whilst surviving on board with some food, water and a cell-phone. He also had telephone numbers to contact in New Zealand to deliver his illegal stash. He was found on the way to Christchurch in his hiding place along with a backpack of pseudoephedrine and a foil of cannabis.
There were no mitigating factors, the judge said. Lewenikurowai was convicted in 1993 of possessing dangerous drugs and jailed in Auckland 11 years ago for aggravated robbery. He was jailed again in New Zealand last year for possessing a precursor substance, possessing LSD and possessing ecstasy with a street value of up to $80,000. Lewenikurowai also had a history of entering New Zealand illegally, the judge said. Prosecutor Pip Currie said Lewenikurowai's probation report was appaling , he was considered at a high risk of re-offending and had shown no motivation to change. Defence lawyer, Leuate Iosefa said his client was wanted in Fiji on serious matters and had skipped bail to go to New Zealand.
