Background
A woman was strangled or beaten unconscious by her male flatmate after he told her he had spent all their rent money at the Christchurch Casino. The flatmate, Glen Warren Levy, 28, a Motueka fisherman, is now in custody awaiting sentence on serious charges. In Christchurch District Court yesterday, he admitted injuring the woman with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and kidnapping her. Police prosecutor Sergeant Ash Tabb said the incident happened in Christchurch on April 15 after Levy told the woman he had spent their rent money. They were already behind with the rent. The flatmate told him off and as she walked away she felt Levy's hands on her neck and throat.
He strangled her momentarily and pushed her into a cupboard door. She was left struggling for breath and fearing for her life. She managed to break free of him, but fell and blacked out. While she was lying on the floor she again struggled to pull his fingers from her throat and he then stamped on her head and kicked her in the face, knocking out two front teeth. He then dragged her into the bedroom and told her she "wasn't going anywhere". The woman lay bleeding on the bed and assured him she would not call the police. After a time, the phone rang and Levy ran to answer it. Afterwards, he told her she could leave. Judge Michael Crosbie remanded Levy in custody to June 16 for a probation report and sentence. Levy will also be resentenced on that date for an earlier charge where he was given supervision.
