Background
Waikato Times story here
Leonard's 15-year-old co-offender was sentenced last year to 10 months' home detention after she admitted stabbing the complainant in the back with a kitchen knife. In sentencing, Judge Merelina Burnett described how the complainant woke about 11pm on March 16 last year to find Leonard and her associate inside his home.
The pair fled the house in opposite directions but Leonard was chased down by the man. He managed to grab her bag and went back to the house where his pregnant wife was waiting with their young child. Leonard also returned to the property and demanded her bag back, knowing it contained items which could identify her. She then fled the house again and tried to scale a high fence at the back of the property.
The man gave chase and tried to pull Leonard off the fence. Leonard reacted by biting down on the man's arm. As the man tried to wrench his arm free, Leonard's accomplice approached from behind and stabbed him in the back. The man eventually tore his arm free from Leonard's mouth and recalled hearing his flesh tearing between her clamped teeth. The bite left him with permanent scarring. Judge Burnett said the victim and his wife had since moved house but continued to feel unsafe in their home. The judge noted that on the night of the attack Leonard was dressed in red and black gang colours.
