Background

From The Press February 2005
A suitcase found in a rubbish skip nearby contained gloves owned by King and a 3kg axe with blood and hair on it. Bloodied clothing was found in a washing machine in the house, and blood in a laundry tub. The victim had 46 separate injuries, including 18 blows with a blunt instrument to the head. She also had a broken hyoid bone, revealing an attempt at strangulation had occurred, and wounds to the hands.
King was found in Spencer Park, north of Christchurch, after a six-day manhunt, having spent some of the time living rough. The court was told King was already serving a six-year jail sentence for burglary, imposed last April. The judge said a minimum non-parole term sought by the Crown would be heard in the High Court on March 10. He called for psychiatric and updated probation reports.
