From the Daily News 13th October 2000
A man who bashed his de facto partner, tried to rape her, and also bit off part of a man's ear in another assault, was yesterday sent to jail for more than six years. In the New Plymouth District Court, Judge David Ongley (Wellington) said unemployed New Plymouth man Alistair John King (38) had subjected his partner to prolonged violence and degradation during his five-hour assault and attempted rape of her. The central city street fight was also serious violence.
Crown prosecutor Rebecca Mann said the July 9 attack on King's partner occurred after they had been at a party in New Plymouth. A drunk King verbally abused the woman, punched her about the head and body, and pulled by her hair, leaving bare patches on her scalp. He choked her until she blacked out, and also tried to rape her. He also cut his face with a scalpel and allowed the blood to drip on her, suggesting that he would tell others that she had attacked him.
The other assault related to a fight in Currie St, New Plymouth, on May 11 in which King bit off a large section of a man's ear after the two men had become involved in a fight. King bit off a large section of a man's left ear and spat it on the ground. He also kicked the victim. He was also charged with two breaches of periodic detention and with benefit fraud involving about $4400 for collecting the community wage and accommodation supplement at various times from April 1998 to May this year.
