Background
From Waikato Times story 18th December 2003
A Te Kuiti man who held a woman at knifepoint in her house in August, forced her to remove her clothes, cut her phone lines, stole from her and then made her drive him to Otorohanga has been jailed for eight years. And he has done it before. Yesterday, Hamilton District Court heard Allan Nguru Kawhena, 18, earlier appeared in the Youth Court after holding a knife to a nurse's throat in May 2001, and making sexual remarks.
The latest incident resulted in charges of kidnapping, aggravated robbery and indecent assault. Kawhena forced his way into her home in August 28, wearing a balaclava and socks over his hands, brandishing a 20cm knife and demanding cash. Judge Robert Spear said the summary of facts did not make it clear how Kawhena arrived at the house, but he was clearly intent on robbery when he arrived. Kawhena knew the woman would be alone and vulnerable.
"You subjected the complainant to a terrifying ordeal which lasted more than an hour, during which time you obtained some $600." Kawhena cut telephone cords and took a cellphone. He twice demanded she remove clothing, which she did at knifepoint fearing she would be raped or killed. Later they got into the woman's car and drove to Otorohanga, while he made sexual remarks. At some point near Otorohanga he got out and walked away, threatening to kill her if she told anyone. Kawhena was apprehended by a police a short time later. Judge Spear said a sentence of eight years was appropriate.
We note that Kawhena has an extensive history of drug and alcohol abuse
