Background
From the Dominion Post 08/02/2007
A Wanganui "vigilante" whose sawn-off shotgun blast wounded a man and his dogs has been jailed for 7½ years, despite a judge noting he had acted out of genuine concern. Colin Jackson, 40, appeared in the High Court at Palmerston North yesterday for sentencing for an attempted murder. It was the final act in a bitter saga between him and another man. On August 11 he had hidden inside the Hackett St home of a female friend when the male victim pulled into the driveway and rammed Jackson's parked car. As the man sat in his car with four dogs, Jackson walked toward him with the loaded shotgun and fired into the rear window - hitting two dogs and the man's ear.
Dumping the gun, shells and car, he was later arrested in Palmerston North. Justice Alan MacKenzie said the case was "almost bizarre", as Jackson believed the victim was encouraging the woman to use drugs and was trying to help her. "You are somewhat of a rescuer and help out of a genuine concern ... but your attempt was misguided and the methods used completely unacceptable to society." He had a transient lifestyle and a long list of previous convictions dating back to 1983, including sex and assault charges.
A probation report called him a complex man whose concern and loyalty to others was mixed with a distinct anti-social attitude. Prosecutor Harry Mallalieu said the murder attempt was premeditated - as he lay in wait and sought the shotgun specifically. Jackson showed no remorse. "The prisoner had a personal vendetta and hatred for the victim and his only regret really is that he didn't finish the job," he said. "Whilst there was no great risk to the community in general there was a risk to the victim and anyone else Jackson believes are no good. That vigilante attitude is of great concern." Defence lawyer Debbie Goodlet said he admitted guilt as soon as possible and responsibility for his actions.
