A young girl was "groomed" for sexual contact with a friend of her mother's, a High Court judge at Wellington said yesterday. Wayne Hulbert's first attempt at having sex with the girl failed only because she was then just eight years old, Justice Gendall said. In the following three years Hulbert groomed and prepared the girl, and she was raped at age 11, he said.

Hulbert pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting the girl's 11- year-old sister, and then attempting to sexually violate the younger girl, violating her with his fingers and finally raping her. Hulbert, 38, a beneficiary of Stokes Valley, was sentenced to seven years jail. Justice Gendall said the girls' mother was at first unable to take any action about the offending. The girls were later put in the care of Child, Youth and Family and extended family members.

Hulbert was on a sickness benefit at the time and said he was using large amounts of cannabis oil. "So much for the therapeutic effects of cannabis oil, if that be correct," Justice Gendall said. He said a probation officer assessed Hulbert as a high risk for reoffending because he lacked insight into his offending. Hulbert's comments also suggested that somehow the young girl shared some of the blame for what happened.
