The Gisborne High Court was told that the actual rape was actually avoided because of the girls age which prevented penetration and the intervention of a passer-by. When police caught Houia he said he "had a problem with little girls". The seven year old victim struggled to cope with life after the attack and was "a very upset and disturbed young girl and this is likely to affect her for some time, if not forever". During sentencing Houia drummed his fingers on the stand, showed no remorse and gave the court the fingers when being escorted out by police.
