Background
From the Rotorua Daily Post January 24th 2009
A Kaingaroa man has pleaded guilty to kidnapping and domestic assault charges a
Judge described as "degrading".
Lee James Horua, 47, appeared before Judge Phillip Cooper in the Rotorua District Court yesterday where he pleaded guilty to one count each of kidnapping, attempted rape, indecent assault and two counts of assault with intent to injure.
On the weekend of July 13 and 14 last year, the pregnant victim and two children were sleeping in the lounge of Horua's Kaingaroa home about 9.30pm when he began arguing with the woman. The argument continued in the kitchen, where Lee began punching the woman about the head, grabbed her by the throat and threatened to kill her unborn baby and its father, Judge Cooper said.
Shoes were thrown at the woman and she suffered serious bruising from a number of punches to the head, face and body. Horua stopped his victim from calling police by removing her cellphone. When she escaped outside, he "dragged" her back to the house. The following morning, Horua sent the children outside, sexually assaulted the victim and tried to rape her after forcefully removing her clothing.
Horua told another man, who witnessed the assault, that he could "have a turn" if he wanted. "There was particular degradation with the comments you made to [the other Man]," Judge Cooper said. The attack stopped only when someone arrived to pick up the children. Horua was remanded in custody for a pre-sentence report and is to reappear in Court on March 5 for sentencing.
