Sentenced to ten years in July 1998
Background
From the Christchurch Press 09/07/1998
A man who raped an 11-year-old girl within hours of being entrusted by her family to look after her has been temporarily sentenced to 10 years jail by a Christchurch District Court judge.
George Hori Hemi, 41, unemployed (Richard Peters), was found guilty of raping the girl on three occasions when she was aged 11 and 12. He was also found guilty of assaulting her by punching her in the face.
Judge Colin Doherty said the first rape had been on the day in 1995 when Hemi first looked after her. The others, occurring over the next nine months, had been at his home and at a Christchurch beach.
Hemi continued to maintain his innocence and showed no remorse. ``She was a vulnerable little girl and should have been able to trust you,'' the judge said.
