"It takes little imagination to believe in the fury and upset this has caused. I think you know that," Christchurch District Court Judge Stephen Erber told Justin Leigh Harney. Harney had pleaded guilty to two charges of stealing from a vehicle, and was appearing for sentence. He had no occupation - the thefts occurred in the city on January 31, just one day after Harney had been released from a term of imprisonment for another dishonesty conviction. He has 49 previous convictions for dishonesty and had been targeting tourists.
Defence counsel Tim Fournier accepted that this type of offending would sour a New Zealand visit for tourists even if travel insurance covered their losses. There is still $1250 worth of property unrecovered from the thefts. Harney was seen as a high risk of reoffending because the probation officer said he accepted no responsibility and did not think he needed rehabilitation. Judge Erber jailed him for nine months and ordered him to pay the $1250 reparations.
