Background
From a Southland Times story 22/09/2006
A MANAWATU Mongrel Mob member was jailed for 12 months yesterday for failing to honour his parole conditions and assaulting a protected female. Leon Tuiriangi Hakaraia, 27, formerly of Palmerston North, appeared in the Invercargill District Court before Judge Murray Abbott after pleading guilty to the charges. Judge Abbott said Hakaraia assaulted his former partner at Palmerston North Hospital 's accident and emergency waiting area in the presence of two security officers on March 13. After an argument and confrontation, Hakaraia punched the woman in the back of the head then kicked her twice to the torso, the judge said. He had already previously breached the conditions of his parole.
Defence counsel Hugo Young said the two were arguing because Hakaraia had not wanted the woman to come to the hospital with him to drop off an injured friend. When she came anyway they had an argument. Judge Abbott: "What you're saying is, she didn't obey him." Hakaraia had already been to prison twice for assaulting females and prison was the only appropriate sentence for his most recent offending. Probation reports said Hakaraia had positive qualities but was simply not motivated to address issues that contributed to his offending, particularly substance abuse and his affiliation with the Mongrel Mob, the judge said. He was given nine months' jail for the assault and a further three months for breach of the parole and the protection order.
