Background
The Southland Times, 7th July 2009
An Invercargill man who stabbed his neighbour in the face has been sent to jail for the attack. Paul Lee Haberfield, 37, was sentenced to seven and a half years' jail with a minimum non-parole period of five years when he appeared before Justice Hugh Williams in the High Court at Dunedin last week on a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The police summary of facts says Haberfield had been drinking at the Invercargill Workingmen's Club on July 13 last year when he became intoxicated and was told to leave.
Becoming aggressive to bar staff, he was removed from the club by staff, and police were called. Taken to his Tweed St home by police, Haberfield tried to enter a neighbour's flat where a "social gathering" was taking place but was told he wasn't welcome, the summary says. Going to his own flat, he came out carrying a large knife, which he used to attack the victim in the face. The victim suffered multiple cuts to his face, which required stitches, the summary says. Three police officers were required to arrest Haberfield, and he was also pepper sprayed. Crown prosecutor Michael Morris sought preventive detention for Haberfield but it was declined.
