Background
NZ Herald story here
From the Dominion Post 14th July 2009
The Wainuiomata Hill Road and three doors stood between Trevor William Grindrod and his target but they were no match for the hammer-wielding panel beater. By the time Grindrod, 35, had walked several kilometres from Wainuiomata to the Lower Hutt home of a man he saw as his rival for a woman's affections, it was the early hours of January 11.
He broke down the outside door of the house in Moera, then another door, and eventually smashed a hole in a bedroom door that was large enough for Grindrod to get through. The victim was able to call police before he was attacked and officers stopped the assault before he was seriously injured.
In the High Court at Wellington yesterday, Grindrod pleaded guilty to wounding the man. He also pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary of the man's home and damaging the doors and a bathroom vanity unit. After he made his guilty pleas, the Crown offered no evidence on a more serious charge of attempted murder, and he was discharged on that count.
