Eligible for release on parole June 2005
Background
From a Christchurch Press story June 1996
A 28-year-old unemployed man was yesterday sentenced to mandatory life imprisonment after being found guilty by a jury of murder. After almost nine hours of deliberations, the jury agreed that Steven Hapareta Grey had murdered Garry John McMillan on June 28.
Mr McMillan, 50, died in Christchurch Hospital eight days after being found unconscious and naked from the waist down in the Rawiti Domain. He was suffering from severe injuries and hypothermia.
A male member of the jury fell ill late on Thursday night and yesterday the jury resumed its deliberations at 9am with 11 members. Justice Panckhurst told the remaining jurors that a provision under the Crimes Act allowed deliberations to continue with 11 jurors. No submissions were made by the Crown seeking a minimum non-parole period.
