Background
From Brian Harmers' WYSIWYG News March 1994
Raymond Russell Green, 23 and Garth Timokina Thompson have been on trial for the murder of Dr Howard Teppett, and the rape of his 78 year old sister. Both alleged offences occurred during the burglary of Dr Teppett's home. Dr Teppett was savagely beaten with an iron bar,
and died as a result of a punctured lung.
The trial judge directed the jury as to the required conditions for a murder charge to stick. Motive and a cause-effect link were among the required conditions.
The jury acquitted Thompson, and found Green guilty of rape and manslaughter. There has been considerable media focus on the outrage felt by various groups including the family, the Foxton community, and the police association. Popular opinion seems to be that, since both were on the premises in the commission of a crime, and as a result of that unlawful act, Dr Teppett died, then murder has been committed.
Police are now laying a further charge of aggravated robbery against one of the two.
