Background
Taranaki Daily News, 9th December 2009
DESPITE a protection order being taken out against him 15 years ago, Ray Anthony Glen Eynon continued to torment his partner during their on-off relationship. The 49-year-old unemployed Manaia man admitted two assaults, two breaches of a protection order, threatening to kill and threatening grievous bodily harm and was sentenced in the Hawera District Court yesterday. He had previously denied the charges.
The latest incident during a period between August 18 and September 21 prompted his partner to leave the country with the couple's children. The court heard through a victim impact statement Eynon's partner felt safe when he was behind bars. On August 18, the victim told Eynon the relationship was over. When she went to get out of the bath he struck her on the back with the buckled end of a belt.
The attacked happened in front of their daughter who yelled at Eynon to leave her mother alone. Eynon also threatened to cut off the victim's head and feed it to the dogs. On September 21 Eynon confronted the victim with a butcher's knife and got her in a headlock. He held the knife to her throat with the blade facing away and made a slicing motion while telling her how much he wanted to slit her throat.
Judge Allan Roberts said the victim said the relationship had never been stable and the defendant had trouble focusing on anything other then himself. His unemployment was also an issue. The abuse was prolonged and their daughters were exposed to it. They were getting counselling. "This unfortunate woman was relying on a protection order that to you meant nothing," Judge Roberts said.
Eynon had also written a letter to the judge in which he said he was "deeply ashamed and hurt" about the trouble he had caused his partner and daughter. The distance between them now would have an impact on Eynon, said the judge. "You may care for her but you lack the skills to deal with it." The defendant had a "dreadful" history with 17 convictions for violence. He had been jailed on 14 occasions, the judge said. Eynon was jailed for two years on the threatening charges, one year on the two assaults and four months on the breaches of protection order.
