Crown prosecutor Andrew Britton cited High Court cases where the punishment level in historic cases was judged on what the law standards were at the time of offending, but approached with modern attitudes. In today's terms, the sentence would carry an 18-year jail term. From a starting point of 12 years for the rape charges, Judge Roberts recognised concessions of the guilty plea and lowered the sentence to nine years, with a further six-month reduction for Evans' age.
