Violence was part and parcel of a relationship with Geoffrey Ngamane Emery. There were times when his partner of nearly four years complained to police and others but nothing was said. Between December 1998 and May 2002 the beatings were constant. In the Hamilton District Court yesterday the 39-year-old general hand from Kihikihi was sentenced to 12 years in prison with a minimum non-parole period of six years. Emery stood in the dock as Judge Robert Spear recounted some of the attacks including one where Emery held his partner over the bath and put a butcher's knife to her neck threatening to kill her.

The attack finished with Emery stabbing her in the hand, cutting the webbing of her fingers. She is left with permanent scars. The final attack on May 11 lasted two hours. At one stage he pinched her windpipe making her unconscious. He raped her, then beat and raped her again. Emery faced 22 charges including assault and rape when he appeared for trial last year. He pleaded guilty to a number of charges and was found guilty of charges including rape, injuring, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and assault with a weapon.
