Background
From a Christchurch Press story 26/02/2007
Steel-capped boots were used in a violent domestic attack on a woman which left her badly hurt, a court has been told. "She believes if it was not for the intervention of others, you might have killed her," Christchurch District Court Judge Brian Callaghan said in sentencing Hikuera Edwards, 37, to three years jail. "You have a horrible record for violence, if you don't mind me saying," the judge said, referring to Edwards' record of seven previous convictions for assault, three of them for assaulting women. This time he admitted a charge of injuring with intent to injure. The judge said Edwards grabbed the victim by the hair, threw her to the floor and began a sustained attack including kicks to the head and face with steel-capped boots.
An associate tried to stop him, but was punched for his trouble, and the kicks to the head continued, the judge said. Defence counsel David Bunce said Edwards was unhappy about his actions. Alcohol was a factor, although not mitigating, and Edwards acknowledged an alcohol problem. Prosecutor Zannah Johnston called for a starting point of three years, and noted Edwards was on bail at the time. The judge said a probation report revealed a propensity for violence, the record showing prior police call-outs to domestic incidents involving Edwards. It was aggravating that the incident continued after Edwards was asked to stop, as was the attack to the head. It was extreme violence leaving the victim needing extensive stitches for cuts. The judge also ordered reparation of $500.
