A Gisborne hotel carpark brawl which left a man dead was rooted in a gang culture of pack attack and pack anonymity, the High Court in Auckland has been told.

Lawrence Glen Atkins, 26, and Mark William Edmonds, 23, both of Gisborne, were yesterday appearing before Justice Dame Silvia Cartwright for sentencing after the killing of Haloti Tupou in the Gisborne Hotel on March 6 last year.

A Gisborne jury had earlier found both men not guilty of murder but found Atkins guilty of manslaughter and Edmonds guilty of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Atkins was sentenced to eight years in prison and Edmonds was sentenced to six years.

Crown prosecutor Denys Barry said the attack was an unprovoked. The victim was an innocent and helpless man who had done nothing other than break a nearby window. The initial attack by Atkins had resulted in gang members "swarming" around and becoming involved in the attack. The sheer brutality of the attack was at the top end of the scale and Atkins had shown no remorse.
