A man who sexually violated an American tourist and set fire to her Rotorua motel room has been sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment after appearing in Whangarei District Court. Deryk Allen Doar, 28, unemployed, of Whangarei, appeared for sentencing before Judge John Cadenhead after earlier pleading guilty to aggravated wounding, unlawful sexual connection, arson, disqualified driving and two burglary charges. A charge of attempted murder was withdrawn.
Judge Cadenhead sentenced Doar to 12 years' jail for aggravated wounding and 12 years for unlawful sexual connection. On each of the burglary charges he sentenced Doar to six years' imprisonment. For arson, he sentenced Doar to two years' jail. On the driving charge he was disqualified for 18 months. The prison terms would be served concurrently
