Southland Times story here about his further offending
From a Dominion article 24/12/1998
A 21-year-old who committed a crime described by Judge Phil Moran as every elderly woman's worst nightmare, was sentenced to 11 years' jail in the Invercargill District Court yesterday. Rima Matea Devlin stood with eyes downcast as he received his sentence, while the family of the elderly woman he raped comforted each other. Judge Moran told Devlin the community was undoubtedly outraged at the crime he committed on July 15, 1993. Devlin raped the then 81-year-old woman after being confronted by her during the burglary of her home.
The rape went on for 30 minutes, despite the woman's protestations and her telling Devlin that he was hurting her. Devlin left the woman cut and bruised, but Judge Moran said the psychological damage was even worse than the physical pain. "(The victim) continues to live in fear -- she's been concerned over the past five years that you would come back," Judge Moran said. He said the victim was a virtual prisoner in her own home since the crime and had spent a lot of money on locks and alarms. "You terrorised her on that night and she has had to live with that terror," Judge Moran said.
