Background
Waikato Times Hamilton, May 18, 1996
A 19-year-old Taumarunui man was jailed for manslaughter when he appeared in
the High Court in Hamilton yesterday. On July 15 last year, in Taumarunui,
Tamati Renee Cribb stabbed David Wiremu Adams in the heart, which killed him.
Yesterday Cribb, unemployed, was jailed for seven years for manslaughter.
As she sentenced him, Justice Goddard said that despite his age that was the
minimum jail sentence she could impose.
Cribb was found guilty of manslaughter three weeks ago by a jury after a five day hearing, having originally been charged with murder. Justice Goddard said Cribb had been drinking at a 21st birthday party and went out with a friend who had a knife. He started arguing with David Adams, which later developed into street heckling on both sides. Cribb confronted Mr Adams, swishing the knife in the air.
A woman trying to prevent a fight was pulled out of the way and Cribb stabbed Mr Adams. He left, apparently unaware Mr Adams was mortally wounded. Justice Goddard said Mr Adams' death had a terrible impact on his family. In Cribb's favour, Justice Goddard said he left home at 14 partly because of violence from his stepfather. "That undoubtedly shaped your attitude and behaviour over the next five or six years."
"However, you're an intelligent adult human who's the master of his own destiny." He was sensitive enough to be remorseful and had references outlining his potential.
