A MAN who bound a former girlfriend with sellotape, raped her and then threatened her with a pistol, was jailed for eight years when he appeared in the New Plymouth District Court yesterday. Steven Robert Crawford (22), unemployed of Waitara, had previously admitted raping the woman in New Plymouth on March 3.

Judge Chris Harding said Crawford's early guilty plea, his remorse and lack of previous convictions were mitigating factors. However, there was an element of premeditation in inviting the complainant to the house concerned; and binding her and threatening her with an air pistol were aggravating features, which cancelled out the mitigating aspects.

Defence counsel Joy Talbot said Crawford was socially inexperienced and immature and equated sex with love. He was "hugely sorry for screwing up the complainant's life". The two had had regular consensual sex for several months after they had "separated," until she started seeing another man in February. Crawford had difficulty coming to terms with that, Ms Talbot said.

Judge Harding said Crawford had used a ruse to get the complainant to the house on the day in question. When she tried to leave he had sat on her and bound her arms behind her with sellotape, after which he raped her. He then brandished a pistol at her, though she did not know it was an unloaded air pistol, and told her to go home.
