Background
From the Southland Times 11/05/2007
Invercargill police say they are hunting for a dangerous and prolific criminal who walked out of a Dunedin house while on home detention and has not been seen since. Richie Stuart Clutterbuck, 44, could be hiding out anywhere in the South Island, police say. Clutterbuck walked from a Dunedin address at 4am on Thursday while serving the remainder of his prison sentence on home detention. Detective Sergeant Mark McCloy, of Invercargill, said Clutterbuck was wearing a security ankle bracelet at the time he wandered from the home. The bracelet activated and alerted a security company, who in turn informed police.
It is unknown if he is still wearing the bracelet. Clutterbuck had contacts throughout the South Island and had previously offended in Invercargill, Mr McCloy said. He was on home detention for dishonesty offending but also had an "extensive history" of violence offending. "I want to catch him. He is a prolific offender and needs to be caught to prevent further offending. I consider him dangerous because of his history," Mr McCloy said. Anyone who may see Clutterbuck should phone police. They should not approach him.
Another disastrous move... Despite this offender's violent career criminal history he was granted home detention. Would it not have been safer to let an offender with fraud convictions, with no history of violence offending serving their sentences out in the community? In our opinion home detention is a failed experiment, and we will continue to push for an end to it for all repeat violent offenders and sex offenders.
