Background
In the Napier High Court, Justice Alan MacKenzie set a starting point of 12 years but reduced it by a third because of Clapperton's early guilty plea, remorse and acceptance of responsibility. Clapperton had targeted Maori children and befriended their families. A psychologist described Clapperton's offending as "predatory and manipulative". Despite being given intensive treatment in the Te Piriti programme for sex offenders Clapperton had continued to offend.
