Christchurch Press article 3rd February 2000
A man who burgled a house and attacked the occupant has been jailed for two years. In the Christchurch District Court yesterday, Judge Ray Kean said that Jason Whetu Campbell, 21, entered a house at 7am by opening a door. The occupant, who was in bed, was woken by the defendant's torch shining in the bedroom. The victim got out of bed and confronted Campbell, but was punched around the head and face, and thrown to the ground. Campbell left, but came back a few minutes later and started banging on the door, adding to the fear of the victim, Judge Kean said. When the door was not opened, Campbell smashed a window. As well as pleading guilty to burglary, assault, and intentional damage, Campbell admitted three theft charges, and one each of breach of periodic detention and breach of bail.
Christchurch Press article 7th June 2006
A man is behind bars for at least five years for his part in the heist of a Christchurch tavern, in which he aimed a loaded rifle at a terrified publican. Sentencing Jason Whetu Campbell, 27, after he was found guilty of aggravated robbery of The Lodge tavern, Christchurch District Court Judge Stephen Erber said yesterday he would pass a sentence of nine years. He queried if most people would think the normal eligibility for release at one-third of the sentence was adequate. In his view it was not, especially taking into account Campbell's serious previous record for violence, so he would impose a five- year minimum non-parole term. The judge accepted a co- offender, Neville Deveer McCausland, 31, took a far lesser role as a lookout.
He was sentenced to four years jail after being found guilty of the same charge. The judge said aggravating factors were considerable. "Firstly, a loaded weapon was used, there were threats of violence, actual violence occurred in the tying up of the victim, a large amount of money was stolen, and the robbery was carefully planned," he said. A co-offender who previously worked at the tavern -- already dealt with by the court -- knew the manager's routine, and told the others involved about how cash was handled. Campbell went in with a loaded rifle and robbed the manager of over $31,000, tied him up and threatened him by working the bolt of the rifle.
McCausland kept a lookout, having gone along to make up the numbers and "stiffen the spine" of the others, the judge said. The robbery had a considerable effect on the victim, who had to alter work routines and had been concerned his pregnant wife would walk in on the robbery. While insurance covered most of the loss, he was still $10,000 out of pocket, the judge said. Lawyer Richard McGuire said Campbell denied involvement. He urged the judge not to impose a minimum term. Appearing for McCausland, Rupert Glover said McCausland did nothing except stay in the car.
