Hitting an English tourist with a beer handle has landed New Plymouth painter Dick-Joplin Taiwhakaea Calder, 31, a 20-month jail sentence.
Calder had admitted a charge of assault with a weapon after an altercation between two groups at New Plymouth's Mad Tom's Bar about 2am on May 30. The victim, Andrew Patrick Ryan, had been in one of the groups but not involved in the fight when Calder tried to provoke him into an altercation. When Mr Ryan went to walk away Calder followed him, hitting him in the head with the glass. Mr Ryan received a large gash to his forehead. When police arrived and arrested Calder he yelled out "welcome to Aotearoa" before he was led away. The tourist was taken to Taranaki Base Hospital where he received four stitches to his head.
