Sentenced to 8 years 6 months in April 2001
Background
From Waikato Times story April 28th 2001
Peter Teora Brown grabbed a 19-year-old Te Awamutu woman and raped her when she
opened the locked door of her sleepout to run away from him.
Brown, 27, of Te Awamutu, was yesterday sentenced to 8 years 6 months jail in the
Hamilton District Court on rape and unlawful sexual connection charges.
Judge Jim Rota told Brown he would have faced another four years if home invasion laws had been in place when the rape took place early on the morning of August 2, 1998. Crown prosecutor Janine Bonifant said Brown had planned the attack after seeing the 19-year-old reading on her bed in the sleepout earlier that night. The victim was woken by Brown trying to break into the sleepout and decided to run inside to her mother and stepfather when she could no longer hear Brown outside. As she opened the door Brown was standing in front of her. He pushed her inside and raped her on her bed.
Brown told police he apologised to his victim before raping her, then gagged her with socks. Brown said he would kill her if she resisted or made too much noise, the summary of facts for the case said. Judge Rota said it appeared the victim may never "come to grips" with what had happened. A victim impact report on the attack said the woman was unable to cope with pressure or stress, and could not manage her emotions after the attack. The woman heard noises in the night for months after the attack, needed prescription drugs to sleep, and no longer felt safe at night, the report said.
From Taranaki Daily News story May 16th 2007
FOUR people appeared in the New Plymouth District Court yesterday on burglary
charges following an incident in Strandon late on Monday night.
Debra Ann Poi (23), unemployed of Waitara, Ricky James Hohepa (22), concrete
worker of Te Awamutu, Kylie Rochelle Pemberton (23), prostitute of Napier, and
Peter Teora Brown (34), unemployed of Te Awamutu, appeared before Judge Rob
Murfitt.
Poi, Hohepa and Pemberton were remanded on bail to appear again in the New Plymouth District Court on May 29. Brown was remanded in custody and had his charge transferred to Wanganui where he faces other charges. A fifth accused did not attend court, because he was was in hospital recovering from chest injuries after falling down a bank while allegedly trying to evade police on Monday night, New Plymouth Detective Sergeant Greg Gray said. The quintet allegedly broke into cars in a Strandon car sales yard, stealing stereos. A member of the public reported suspicious activity to the police.
