THE stepdaughter of a man who bashed his mentally impaired son yelled obscenities at a Hawke's Bay judge as she sentenced him to jail yesterday in Napier District Court. David Eugene Bristowe, represented by Roger Phillip, was found guilty last month of wounding his son, Barney Wilson, with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and causing grievous bodily harm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Bristowe was sentenced to 10 years' jail.
Mr Phillip said although the jury had found him guilty, Bristowe insisted he had not hurt his son: "My client does not take responsibility for the offending and that remains today." Bristowe had severely beaten his son from December 24, 2005 to March 8 last year. The assaults included hitting him with a dog chain, jug cord, wood and a mop, as well as punching and kicking him. Mr Wilson, 21, received multiple injuries, such as fractures, cuts and bruises. Judge Bridget Mackintosh said Mr Wilson's back was covered in scars and the evidence painted a "grisly" picture of violence over a period of time.
