Sentenced to 18 months with automatic release after 9 months in July 2006
Background
From the Dominion Post July 2006
A Wellington man has been jailed for beating his mother's partner with a metal bar and severing his ear. For a long time Daniel James Bossom had difficulty understanding why his mother continued her relationship with the man, leading to a degree of estrangement, defence lawyer Greg King said in the High Court at Wellington yesterday.
He was much larger than Bossom and punched out when Bossom confronted him about his mother's bruises. Bossom knocked him unconscious with the metal bar and then hit him twice more. Bossom and his mother then called help for the victim, Justice Forrie Miller said. He sentenced Bossom, 24, to 18 months' jail, but said he could ask the Parole Board if he could serve some on home detention.
