Found guilty by a jury of sexually violating a five year old girl in 1997. This was Beard's second trial for the offence. He had been convicted in 1998 but the Court of Appeal ordered a new trial. Beard was accused of violating the girl while she was watching television on her mother's bed. He denied the charges of sexually violating the girl by raping, sodomising and performing oral sex on her. Judge David Saunders, however, said the child had described the incidents in terms beyond the understanding of a five year old. Beard was in a relationship with the girl's mother at the time. Judge Saunders said there were no factors mitigating in Beard's offending and it was aggravated by the position of trust and the youth of the complainant. Appeal dismissed March 2000.
