Two teenagers who robbed a dairy, one of them holding a knife to the throat of an attendant, were jailed yesterday. More than $3000 in cash, phone cards, tobacco and lollies were taken in the robbery and sold to pay drug debts. One of the teenagers, Dylan Valvoi, 19, also robbed a woman of her handbag, pulling her to the ground as he cycled past her in Victoria St. Later he snatched another pedestrian's wallet.
Valvoi appeared before Judge Denise Clark in the Hamilton District Court yesterday and was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison. He previously pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery, unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle, assault with intent to rob, and theft. Simon Andrew, 17, of no fixed abode, also admitted aggravated robbery, theft of a motor vehicle, threatening to kill, and escaping custody. He was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison.
On April 5 Valvoi stole a car and he and Andrew used it to go to the Maeroa Superette where they demanded money from the owner. The former owner of the store was also there and had a knife held to his throat by Andrew while Valvoi took $1 and $2 coins, phone cards, lollies and tobacco. Goods and cash stolen totalled $3400. The pair sold the goods in Auckland and were going to give themselves up after visiting an associate in Hamilton but ran away instead. A constable caught Andrew but he struggled and got away when Valvoi intervened.
Lawyer Gordon Wilson said Andrew had a difficult upbringing, ran away from home at 14 years and became involved with "undesirable" people who introduced him to drugs. Valvoi's lawyer Bruce Hesketh said the teenager was under the influence of P when he robbed the dairy. Judge Maze ordered the pair to pay reparation of $3465.60 to the superette, $795 for damage to the stolen car, $100 for personal items lost from the car and $50 to the person robbed on the street.
