Background
From Waikato Times story 28/11/2006
A Hamilton woman yesterday admitted a charge of attempted murder at the start of her trial. Justice Cooper, in the High Court at Hamilton, ordered a mental health assessment of Wendy Alice Amohanga, 28, before she is sentenced on March 6. She was released on bail. She had been facing charges of attempted murder and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after attacking her husband with a butcher's knife in April. When Amohanga admitted the attempted murder, the other charge was withdrawn by police.
The court heard that during a fight at the couple's Stanley St, Hamilton home, Amohanga grabbed the butcher's knife and stabbed her husband Jamal Abdul Nazir Ghazali - a halal slaughterman - in the side. "I didn't notice the pain at first but after a little while, I saw the blood and I felt dizzy," Mr Ghazali said in a statement read to the court. "I worked out I had been stabbed." Witnesses said Amohanga threw crockery on to the floor and Mr Ghazali threw a bottle of cooking oil. Amohanga's brother Shannon Wikiriwhi said he saw her punch Mr Ghazali in the head about six times. He and another family member took Mr Ghazali to hospital, where Amohanga later arrived. When confronted by police at the hospital, Amohanga said: "I'm not scared of the cops. I did it."
