In the Auckland High Court, Justice Venning set a start point of 6 years 6 months because of Aholotu's past record of violence offending and the fact he was on bail at the time of the assault on his former partner but reduced to it by 18 months because of Aholotu's guilty plea and remorse. The judge told Aholotu that he had avoided preventive detention by a very narrow margin.
