From NZ Lawyer story July 6th 2007
Most in the public gallery looked shocked at the appearance of the teenager who yesterday admitted a series of shocking crimes perpetrated early on Saturday. Dressed in a bright orange prison issue boiler suit, the tall 19-year-old barely moved his gaze from the lens of a Taranaki Daily News photographer.
His first reaction was to raise a thin-fingered salute, before fixing a grimace that matched the evil of his crime. Just six days after committing his crimes, Adamson has admitted charges of aggravated robbery, kidnap, rape, unlawful sexual connection and aggravated burglary. He has yet to plead to the lesser charges of resisting arrest, possession of a weapon, failing to stop and dangerous driving. The driving charges followed a high speed chase by police, who finally caught Adamson by pushing him off the road. The swiftness of the admission stunned many in the court, including the police prosecutor, who said a summary of the crime spree had yet to be even prepared. The unemployed man's father and brother had sat patiently in the front row, waiting for more than half an hour for police to bring him up from the cells. Despite sitting just metres away, Adamson refused to acknowledge them.
It was left instead to Adamson's defence lawyer, Julian Hannam, to pass on anything he may have offered up. Mr Hannam told Judge Allan Roberts that his client needed to be assessed by a psychiatrist. He asked that Adamson's next appearance be at least a month away. Judge Roberts gave him six weeks. Judge Roberts also called for a full report to be done by the Community Probation Service before Adamson is sentenced on August 29. The rape offence alone carries a 20-year maximum jail sentence.
The final act of Adamson's appearance was for Mr Hannam to plead with Judge Roberts for interim name suppression. He argued that Adamson's family needed more time to come to grips with his offending before his name was made public. Judge Roberts disagreed, telling the defence that public interest and Adamson's own admission outweighed his argument.
NZPA Story 30th August 2007
A man who raped a woman at knifepoint after breaking into her home has been jailed for 16 years with a non-parole period of 10 years. Tony Daniel Adamson, 22, was sentenced yesterday by Judge Allan Roberts in the New Plymouth District Court. The woman was Adamson's second victim of the night of June 29.
Adamson picked up the first woman – known to him – who was seeking a ride to Egmont Village. During the drive he pulled a knife on her and held it to her neck, telling her he'd been thinking about doing this for a while. She managed to escape from the car and Adamson took off and headed for the home of his second victim, who was also known to him. He broke into the second woman's home just before midnight. The attack took place on the woman's bed in which she had been sleeping.
Adamson flashed the blade of a knife he was carrying and asked her if it was going to happen the easy way or the hard way. He then put his hand over the woman's mouth and raped her – rubbing the blade of his knife on her upper arm. Afterwards, Adamson forced her to perform oral sex on him. Adamson admitted charges of aggravated robbery, kidnapping, rape, unlawful sexual connection, aggravated burglary, resisting police, failing to stop, dangerous driving and possession of a weapon. Adamson's own lawyer, Julian Hannam, yesterday described the events as a "night of extreme madness".
